2nd PLACE

'Double Amputee' by Wingletang.

This was a compelling story of a young person losing both legs and the struggles and challenges of things the able-bodied take for granted.  However, again with no self-pity he rose to the challenges which gave him a purpose in life. The story developed well making it enjoyable to read and struck a chord with me as there are many military establishments in our area and with the British military presence previously in Iraq and now Afghanistan there are depressingly often soldiers arriving home having been blown up by roadside bombs.

WINNER

'A Sideways View' by Vicky Marlowe.

This story was about an elderly lady with what sounded like macular degeneration and was going blind.  Her concern was never for herself and she never had any self-pity but was always concerned about the problems of others. It reflected a selflessness that I often encountered as a doctor. It was written as a diary and I thought it was a worthy winner.

“ There was a good field of entries for this award especially as this is the first year of its presentation. All the manuscripts demonstrated …the lack of understanding, even by loved ones, of the needs of disabled people and I found this particularly poignant... “

3rd PLACE

Hop to it by Gerard the Butler – This was a story about an (Italian) lady who had a traumatic amputation of a limb in a cycling accident and her fight and determination to conquer her adversity with the help of one of her children.

2nd PLACE

A family Reunion by Warlock – This story was about a man with kidney failure whose marriage failed due to the lack of understanding between himself and all members of the family.  It went on to describe the eventual reconciliation and remarriage after his ex-wife donated one of her kidneys to him.  It was told from three perspectives, the man, his wife and his daughter and they each explored the reasons for the breakdown in personal relationships and their eventual reconciliation

WINNER

As One Door Closes – A paralysed lady was learning to ride a horse. Her protective husband didn’t like her risking herself with this dangerous sport and the story explores the rationale from both sides.
